Hotels in Kyiv for English Speaking Visitors
When in Kyiv last year, I found out the hard way that most people do not speak English. That also means that staff at most hotels only speak Russian and/or Ukrainian. Notice that I said MOST, but certainly not all.
I had concerns about this issue, so I did a lot of research before making hotel arrangements in Kyiv. Keeping costs down, the best choice appeared to be the 3-star Hotel Rus, which is located in the city's central district, a few minutes' walk to the southern terminus of Khreschatik Street. As advertised, much of the hotel's staff speaks English, so check-in was no problem at all. Personnel at the currency exchange counter also speak English. In the end, the only language issue I had at the hotel was getting bottled water at the lobby bar, and that was not too difficult either. I believe there are a few other options including the much more expensive 4-star Dnipro Hotel at the north end of Khreschatik Street and the Radisson SAS Hotel.
As of July 2007, there is one more very expensive option, the Hyatt Regency Kyiv. This hotel is located in the central city overlooking St. Catherine's Cathedral and just a few minutes walk from Independence Square. The hotel has all the luxurious trappings you would expect from a Hyatt Regency hotel.
I understand that a new Hilton hotel in Kyiv will begin operation in 2008, so obviously, Kyiv is becoming a more popular tourist destination.
