Travelling to Ukraine - Things to Consider
If you are contemplating a trip to Ukraine, there are many issues to consider to make the trip as hassle-free as possible. The following is a brief list of items to think through during your preparations:
- Passport and Visa Requirements: Do you know the up-to-date information about what is currently acceptable for travelers from your country?
- Language: Can you speak or at least read Russian or Ukrainian? If not, have you made arrangements for a translator?
- Accommodations: Usually hotels or apartments - do you know which are the good ones?
- Financial Considerations: Have you verified the limits on the amount of money you can bring into the country? Do you know where to get the best exchange rates (it's not at the airport)?
- Credit Cards: Ukraine is still a cash economy, so credit cards and travelers checks are not good options
- Transportation: Are you going to rent a car or take public transportation? Are you ready to negotiate fares with cab drivers (they can smell a foreigner a mile away, and some will try to take advantage)? In Kyiv, do you know how the metro system works?
- Drinking Water: Is it safe to drink tap water (not related to radiation), or should you buy bottled water?
- Electricity: This may not be the same as at home. Do you know what Ukraine's electrical standard is? Will you need an adapter to use with your electronics?
- Medical Care: Your health insurance may not be valid or accepted in Ukraine. Are you prepared to deal with an unexpected health issue?
