Chernobyl and Eastern Europe RSS/Atom Feed Change

Since the site’s inception, I have been using Feedburner to handle my RSS/Atom feeds. In case you didn’t know, Google bought Feedburner in 2007. They are now preparing to move Feedburner accounts into Google accounts and I will make the switch in the next several days. This should not affect this site’s feeds, but in case you stop receiving feeds please let me know so I can get it fixed ASAP.

Potential Site Interruptions

My hosting company is planning to move everyone to new servers within the next year. I have decided to be a guinea pig and allow them to move my account to a new server ASAP. Therefore, this site may experience some intermittent downtime sometime in the near future.

I also hope to migrate the site to a newer version of its blogging and content management software, which may also cause some brief downtime.

These changes should allow for more flexibility and better performance. Please bear with me over the next month or two during these upgrades.

Thank you for all your support.

St. Andrew’s Church - Kyiv, Ukraine (Micro Travel Writing Workshop)

This post is my entry for the Micro Travel Writing Workshop, sponsored by Nerd's Eye View.

I am very excited about this opportunity to have my work critiqued, so here is my entry ....

St. Andrew's Church - Kyiv, Ukraine

No structure better captures the historical essence of Kyiv than St. Andrew’s Church. This cerulean-colored, baroque-style church was built in the mid-1700’s by the principal architect of “modern” Moscow, Ivan Michurin, based upon designs by renowned Russian architect Bartholomeo Rastrelli. Restoration of the church’s five bud-shaped domes and spires in the late 1970’s utilized Rastrelli’s original cupola designs that were found in Vienna, Austria prior to the repairs.

St. Andrew’s is the pride of the area, situated high atop Starokyivskaya Hill at the summit of ancient Andriivsky Uzviz. Located at this crossroads of Kyiv’s upper city and the working-class Podil district, the church is now a museum and the centerpiece of a modern bazaar. Artists and street vendors line the cobblestone streets sell their multi-colored matrioshka dolls and other Ukrainian goods from the confines of their white plastic tents.

Today, the church still plays host to occasional services of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. St. Andrew’s is the perfect destination where visitors can immerse themselves in Kyiv’s architecture, history and culture.

Welcome to Chernobyl and Eastern Europe

After a month of work, this site is finally live! Since I am new to web design and development, it took some time to learn my way around Movable Type and Cascading Style Sheets. And don’t get me started on the nightmare that was copying the original blog posts and comments over from Blogger! They really need to become more user friendly over there.

Anyway, I think the new site was worth the effort. Take some time to look around and get comfortable with the layout. Just below the header is a navigation bar/menu. All items work except for “Chernobyl” and “Eastern Europe”, which currently have no content.

The site Blog is a continuation of the original Blogger blog. The Links page has quite a few links to other blogs, Chernobyl sites, and online translators. The About page provides some information about me, and about plans for future content for this site. You can reach me via the Contact page, or directly at mark@chernobylee.com.

The Articles page will contain links to subject-appropriate articles. Currently, the only article is my Chernobyl trip report, that has been available for the past year on Nikongear.com.

The left sidebar has site search capabilities and a list of categories. All blog posts and articles have been categorized, so this feature will allow you to find content based on particular topics.

This site is still a work-in-progress and may be unavailable for brief periods of time. I will try to keep this activity to a minimum, but sometimes it will be unavoidable.

I hope you enjoy the new site. Please feel free to send me your thoughts and suggestions regarding the site or any ideas you have for content, whether it be blog posts, articles or anything else.
